First Day Katakana [Day 51]

Following from Wikipedia, Katakana (片仮名カタカナ, IPA: [katakaꜜna, kataꜜkana]) is a Japanese syllabary, one component of the Japanese writing system along with hiragana,[2] kanji and in some cases the Latin script (known as rōmaji).

So from my simple understand, if the word normal come from foreigner country, that word will using katakana to write.

Today I try to remember first 5 characters

Character

ア (A)

  1. アイス – ice (ice cream)
  2. アメリカ – America
  3. アニメ – anime
  4. アプリ – app (application)
  5. アルバイト – part-time job (from German “Arbeit”)

イ (I)

  1. インターネット – internet
  2. イギリス – England
  3. イメージ – image
  4. イベント – event
  5. イヤホン – earphones

ウ (U)

  1. ウィンドウ – window
  2. ウェブサイト – website
  3. ウイスキー – whiskey
  4. ウイルス – virus
  5. ウーバー – Uber

Why pronoun window is Win ah ? not U ?

I have do some research and this is answer :

Because Japanese doesn’t originally have “wi”, “we”, “wo”, etc. sounds in modern usage, so to approximate foreign sounds like “Wi-Fi” or “Web”, they combine ウ (u) with small vowels like ィ (i), ェ (e), etc. to simulate those sounds.

CombinationSoundExampleMeaning
ウィ“wi”ウィンドウwindow
ウェ“we”ウェブサイトwebsite
ウォ“wo”ウォーターwater

エ (E)

  1. エアコン – air conditioner
  2. エレベーター – elevator
  3. エンジニア – engineer
  4. エネルギー – energy
  5. エクササイズ – exercise

オ (O)

  1. オレンジ – orange
  2. オフィス – office
  3. オンライン – online
  4. オートバイ – motorbike
  5. オーストラリア – Australia

Now this is some question in my head I need to do more research:

  • What if I don’t learning Katakana ? Because almost word can use with Hiragana ?
  • How can I know in sentence when I need to use Hiragana, when I need to use Katakana ?
